We are people too…

Minutes after I posted my first post on ÜberDesi, my GTalk popped up announcing a message from X. Regular readers might know X from here.

12:23 AM

X: wats this uberdesi?

some nri focussed blog?

At this point, I am fuming. Well, I am fuming because, I know where that question is coming from and the mindset. This is one assumption that I’ll back myself on, any day! So I don’t respond immediately. Luckily my phone rings and I talk for sometime and hang up. Then I decide to get this over with.

7 minutes later……

12:30 AM me: sorry.. was on the phone

X: ooh ok

12:31 AM me: errr.. you make it sound like it is shit…

X: not really

well it just seems very nriish

blog

That’s when I got really pissed. Now, if it was an innocent enough question that I was asked in the first place, that last answer from X should have been an emphatic No (as opposed to the insincere “not really”). So I said,

12:32 AM me: if you think so, mebbe it is…

X, I know you will probably read this. And based on this conversation I pasted here, you’ll know that I am referring to you and you alone. The thing is, you should shut up with all the trash talk till you get done with whatever it is you are doing outside India and show us you are capable of doing the opposite of what you seem to think that people like me do.

This might sound like the classic argumentatum ad hominem, but I have nothing personal against you. I don’t normally get worked up over things, but some reason your “holier than thou” attitude sickens me. So I will tell you what one of my blog-idols once told me - GROW UP!

I seriously don’t find it wrong.
The name “UBERDESI” in itself welcoming such thoughts.Whether the person you referred to really had that ‘Holier than thou’ thoughts or not,the title begs for such condescending attitude because of its comparing trait attached to its name.
WTF is UBERDESI? A desi who is UBER or greater or bigger?..
Now comes the question..UBER than whom?
Its not a universal phrase like Akbar the Great that one can associate Desi the UBER..

Raapi: That’s exactly what I said. That I wouldn’t find it wrong either, except that I know who asked me the question. I guess that did it more for me. And as for your questioning on what makes them “Uber”, I think you should take a step back and call it humor. Cool down machi! And frankly I don’t think anything “begs” for condescension unless personal mindset calls for it. That’s all I can say here. Let’s take this offline.

CM: Aaatha.. That only less! They had enough dirt on me! So, control your emosun! :P

    Me: Definitely not you! ;)

Just for the record we are not a desi supremacist site :-)

To answer the question uberdesi is a broadly humor-based website where we discuss anything under the sun. We don’t proclaim to be a #1 blog although we hope to be that one day.
About the “uber” in uberdesi.com from our FAQ site:
    Q. What does the “uber” in uberdesi.com stand for?
    A. Uber is a German word. Karthik came up with the term uber desi and as you probably guessed Karthik is not of German descent. His only claim to anything remotely German is the car he drives and the fact that he visited Germany recently. Maybe he stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, who knows?
Getting back to the point, uber probably means super but not all the time. We user uber more in a sense of super / very . Uber desi = Very desi/ Super Desi. Get it? I know. That’s really clever of us. The meaning really oscillates between super, very, super cool, awesome and/or (insert superlative adjective) here.
