Shankar on Sivaji…
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
It’s not every day that a “Thalaivar padam” releases in the theaters. In fact, this event seems to happen only once in two or three years and is a celebration of sorts. Sivaji’s release is no exception. So, non-Tamil readers of this blog, please excuse. The others though, please see Sun TV VJ/host Vijay Sarathi’s interview with Shankar.

Mannikkanum, ‘Sangar’ pettiyila enna sonnaaru nu neengale paatheenga illa? Avar idhuvarai pettigalil solliyavai:
“It is a movie that would certainly satisfy Rajini-fans. A typical Rajinikanth film, the movie would be a treat for themâ€.
- So, what’s new? What are the salient and UNIQUE features of a typical Rajini film? adhavadhu idhukku munnadi seyyadhadhaya seyya poraaru?
How does he differ from Vijay (or hoes do his movies differ from Vijay’s) apart from the fact that he has more charisma/screen presence than Vijay and he is and looks much older?
HERE IS THE CLINCHER
“The highlight of the movie is that for the first time, we have shot a song sequence (Shana) in huge sets put up on glass. It was a challenging task to shoot the song since the lights would be reflected on the glass. All credit to cinematographer K V Anand for achieving the impossible.â€
- idhukku padatha paathuttu vera karutha sollanuma? yedhukku?
naan pona post-la sonnadha thaan seyya poraaru.
seri, idhellam venaam, pada summary paarunga:
“In a nutshell, the movie is about a man, who wants to do good for the society. The hurdles that he comes across in accomplishing his mission. But is inter spread with gaiety, grandeur and splendor”
- Duh! That’s certainly unique, something we have never seen in any Tamil film, let alone a ‘SANGAR’ film.
[Where is the Rajini of yesteryears? Why can't he do THOSE kinds of roles?]
I rest my case

April 19th, 2007 at 9:02 amRasini: What’s your point? Where’s your case? I don’t get it at all. But I am dumb, so that’s my problem. So from where I stand, anyways, I can see 3 different threads.
1. IF you are wondering why Shankar did not elaborate more about the movie, then I have three words for you - “setting low expectations”, which is good business sense.
2. IF you are bitching about Rajini not doing more movies like the late 70s and early 80s, its called evolution. Rajini the star has overtaken Rajini the actor. It’s sad, but it is natural and its called growth. It has happened with every actor in history and so Rajini is not an anomaly.
3. IF your motivation is to bad mouth Rajini to the benefit of Vijay, this is not the place. “Vijay Saar” has his fans, they have their own place. Please go there. I’d consider it a insult to Rajini if he was compared to Vijay or Ajith (Billa not withstanding!).

April 19th, 2007 at 12:44 pmSuperstarksa,
1. My point is Shankar movies are pointless and Rajini movies, more so.
From where di you get the idea i was wondering why Shankar didn’t elaborate more? I mean, sarakke illadhadhunala dhaan all he has to talk about is songs. “Sivaji will be be talked about and cherished in Indian cinema” - Why? Because the set for a song is made of glass or he has painted an entire village. WTH?? And let’s not even get started about the ’script’. Peace loving ‘normal’ man who wants to change society.
2. Churning out crass films is called evolution?? Soopper…
And why this dichotomy between a ’star’ and ‘good’ cinema? So, there is
3. Vijay movies are in the same pedestal as Rajini movies, give or take a few points. ‘Charisma’, ‘gethu’ ‘power’ etc being the difference, granted. Period. Going by point 3, Vijay has directly evolved into the ‘high’ ground
Amen

Rasini: I owe you a post on this. Your questions are very very valid, but you should quit while you are ahead and not dilute your argument with comparisons that are frankly stupid. But yes, I owe you a post on this.
